Everyone knows the classic of Science Fiction: transporters like in Star Trek, laser 'rays' that act as a modern weapon and invisibility caused by 'bending' light around an object. While more and more 'fictional technology' is dragged to the world of the living, the first 'prototype' of the cloaking device is eager to present itself.

The people at New Scientist(ext) say the achieved result uses gold rings to guide light around the very small object, to give the illusion of invisibility. So far the prototype only works in 2 dimensions and on a tiny scale: the object is only 10 micrometers in size, or 0,01 millimeters.

Typical applications are expected in the military and clandestine sector.
