Sony has demonstrated a breakthrough in developing a biological battery, running on glucose as its prime source. By using the same power generating properties as found in living organisms, the "Bio Battery" is able to deliver a power output of 50mW.
When serializing the batteries to form a chain of 4, the resulting power output is 200mW, or 0,2W. This should be enough to power a mobile audio device with speakers attached.
The technology might play a big role in third world countries. After all, sugar is a common resource even in poor countries. By refilling the battery, an almost unlimited supply of power for mobile devices becomes possible. Sony announced further development to aim at increasing the power output and durability of the technology.
